You see the ranks with each player's evaluator spread, place them on teams, and publish. Each family scans the code on their slip and sees only their own child's report. Free, with private family reports for every player. No child's name is ever stored. ### Sample report: Player 14, U12 G Spring tryouts, Sunday, 14 February 2027 Scored by 3 evaluators. Each line is the average of what they gave, from 1 to 5. - Technique4.0 of 5 - Movement3.7 of 5 - Game sense4.3 of 5 - Effort5.0 of 5 - Coachability4.0 of 5 #### Next steps Squads train from 3 March. Bring shin pads and water. These are the averaged views of the club's evaluators on one day. Team decisions are the club's. Questions go to your club, not to Tryoutpad. A sample family report, as a parent sees it on their phone. ### Three steps on the day 1. **Numbers.** Add your age groups and player numbers, like 1-40, and print a code slip for each family. Keep the number-to-name sheet on paper: Tryoutpad never asks for a name. 2. **Evaluators score by link.** Send each evaluator a private link. They tap a number, then 1 to 5 for each criterion. No account, and no lost scores when the signal drops: unsent scores wait on the phone. 3. **Publish the reports.** Close scoring, check the Board, place players, then publish. Each family opens one report: the average per criterion, how many evaluators scored their child, and your next steps. The scoring rules, with a worked example, are on [how scores are combined](https://tryoutpad.com/how-it-works/). What is stored and for how long is on the [privacy page](https://tryoutpad.com/privacy/), and the [FAQ](https://tryoutpad.com/faq/) covers names, reports, rubrics and signal at the field. Paper backups are on the [printables](https://tryoutpad.com/printables/) page. --- # How tryout scores are combined, step by step, Tryoutpad URL: https://tryoutpad.com/how-it-works/ Last reviewed: 2026-10-28 > How evaluator scores become a shown score, a spread and a rank: unit scores, each evaluator's average, evening out harsh and generous scorers, and the report. ## How tryout scores are combined Each evaluator's scores are averaged per player, evened out against that evaluator's own habits, and then averaged across evaluators into one shown score where 50 is the middle. The steps below are exactly what the server does, in order. Last updated 28 October 2026 ### The rules, in the order you meet them 1. **Players are numbers.** The director adds numbers from 1 to 999 to each age group. No name, birth date, photo, school or contact is asked for, and the director keeps the number-to-name sheet on paper. 2. **Evaluators score by link.** Each evaluator gets a private link and taps a score from 1 to 5 (or 1 to 10) for each criterion. The standard criteria are Technique, Movement, Game sense, Effort and Coachability. An evaluator sees only their own scores, never another evaluator's, and never a rank. 3. **Unit scores.** Each score becomes a number from 0 to 1: the lowest score is 0 and the highest is 1. On a 1 to 5 scale, a 4 is 0.75. 4. **Each evaluator's average for a player.** The unit scores are averaged, with each criterion's weight (1 for every criterion unless the club sets its own). It counts only if the evaluator scored at least half the criteria, rounded up: 3 of the standard 5. A player with fewer is ignored for that evaluator, not counted as low. 5. **Evening out harsh and generous evaluators.** Within an age group, each evaluator's averages are compared with that evaluator's own mean and spread (a standard score, sometimes called a z-score). Someone who gives everyone 4s and 5s and someone who gives 2s and 3s end up on the same footing. When an evaluator has fewer than 5 players or gives almost everyone the same score, the whole group's mean and spread are used for them instead, and the Board says so. 6. **The shown score.** The evened-out values are averaged across the evaluators who scored the player, then shown as 50 plus 10 times that average, to one decimal. 50 is the average evaluator's middle; 60 is about one spread above it. 7. **Spread.** How far apart the evaluators were on a player: 10 times the gap between the highest and lowest evened-out value. A spread of 15 or more is flagged in amber, because the evaluators saw that player very differently. 8. **Rank.** Within the group, by shown score; ties go to the player seen by more evaluators, then the higher raw average, then the lower number. A player nobody has scored is listed below as Not scored. A withdrawn player is left out of every average and listed apart. 9. **Leaving an evaluator out.** The director can leave one evaluator's scores out (or turn their link off and keep their scores). Leaving someone out recomputes every score in the group. 10. **The family report.** Once scoring is closed, the director publishes the reports. A family sees, for their player only: the average score per criterion on the rubric's scale, how many evaluators scored the player, the club's next steps, and if the club chooses, the team and the rank. Never an evaluator's name or single score, the shown score, the spread, or any other player. 11. **Limits and keeping.** Up to 2 tryouts at a time with 60 players and 6 evaluators each. A tryout becomes read-only after 30 quiet days past its date, and is deleted 365 days after its date (with 7 days to restore first), family reports included. Reopening scoring after a publish hides the reports until the next publish, and each report then says when scoring was reopened. Evening out removes some of the difference between harsh and generous evaluators. It cannot remove bias, and it does not make a selection fair or right: the scores are the views of the club's evaluators on one day, and team decisions are the club's. ### Worked example Two evaluators, A and B, score five players on the standard 5 criteria, giving each player the same score on every criterion. A is generous with the top and harsh with the bottom; B scores everyone lower. A's averages are 1, 0.75, 0.5, 0.25 and 0, with a mean of 0.5 and a spread of 0.354, so A's evened-out values are 1.41, 0.71, 0, -0.71 and -1.41. B's averages are 0.5, 0.5, 0.25, 0 and 0, evened out to 1.12, 1.12, 0, -1.12 and -1.12. | Player | A gave | B gave | Score | Spread | Rank | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | 1 | 5 | 3 | 62.7 | 3.0 | 1 | | 2 | 4 | 3 | 59.1 | 4.1 | 2 | | 3 | 3 | 2 | 50.0 | 0.0 | 3 | | 4 | 2 | 1 | 40.9 | 4.1 | 4 | | 5 | 1 | 1 | 37.3 | 3.0 | 5 | Player 1's score is 50 + 10 × (1.41 + 1.12) / 2 = 62.7, and the spread is 10 × (1.41 - 1.12) = 3.0. Player 1's family sees each criterion as 4.0 out of 5 (the average of 5 and 3), scored by 2 evaluators. ### What it is not - Not a selection decision: the club decides teams; the scores are a summary of its evaluators' views. - Not a records system: no names, birth dates or contact details are stored, and a tryout is deleted a year after its date. - Not a messaging tool: families and evaluators are never emailed. The director gets one notice per tryout when the scores are in. - Tryoutpad is not affiliated with any league, governing body, club or tryout software company. --- # Tryout scoring questions, answered plainly, Tryoutpad URL: https://tryoutpad.com/faq/ Last reviewed: 2026-10-28 > Answers about Tryoutpad: why numbers and not names, how scores are combined, evaluator spread, family reports, rubrics, keeping data and signal at the field. ## Questions about tryout scoring Names, scores, reports and your data, answered plainly. The rules themselves are on [how it works](https://tryoutpad.com/how-it-works/). ### Frequently asked questions **Why numbers and not names?** Because tryout data is about children. Tryoutpad never asks for a child's name, birth date, photo, school or contact, so none can leak from it. Players wear or carry a number, the director keeps the number-to-name sheet on paper, and every free-text box refuses email addresses, web addresses and phone numbers. **How are scores combined?** Each score becomes a number from 0 to 1, each evaluator's scores for a player are averaged with the criteria weights, and each evaluator's averages are evened out against their own habits within the age group, so harsh and generous scorers count the same. The evened-out values are averaged across evaluators and shown as 50 plus 10 times that average. How it works has the steps and a worked example. **What is evaluator spread?** How far apart the evaluators were on one player: 10 times the gap between the highest and lowest evened-out value. A spread of 15 or more is flagged in amber on the Board, because the evaluators saw that player very differently and the director may want another look. **What does a family see?** Their player's number and group, the average score for each criterion on the rubric's scale, how many evaluators scored the player, the club's next steps, and, if the club chooses, the team and the rank in the group. Never an evaluator's name or single score, the shown score, the spread or another player. **Can families see other players?** No. Each code opens one player's report and nothing else, and a code only works together with the club's report link. After 10 wrong codes in an hour, the device or network that typed them is paused for an hour; other families are not affected. Guessing spread over many places is stopped at 300 wrong codes an hour on one report link, and the club sees the count. **When do reports appear?** When the director closes scoring and presses Publish the reports. Before that a family's code says the club has not published reports yet. Reopening scoring hides the reports again until the next publish. **Can an evaluator change a score?** Yes, their own, as often as they like while scoring is open: they tap the number again and save. The newest save wins, even from two phones. Once the director closes scoring, nothing more can be saved. If the director reopens scoring, the published reports are hidden until the next publish, and from then on each report says on which date scoring was reopened, because its scores may have changed. **What if an evaluator scores only a few players?** A player counts for an evaluator once at least half the criteria are scored. An evaluator with fewer than 5 such players in a group is evened out against the whole group instead of their own average, and the Board says few scores. A player seen by fewer evaluators than the director asked for shows a grey note. **Can I use my own rubric?** The standard rubric is Technique, Movement, Game sense, Effort and Coachability, each weighted the same. You can set 1 to 12 criteria of your own instead, each weighted 1 to 5. The rubric locks when the first score is saved, so every score means the same thing. **How long is data kept?** A tryout becomes read-only once 30 days have passed since its date and since it was set up, and nothing has changed in it for 30 days. 365 days after the later of its date and the day it was set up, it is deleted with all its scores, codes and reports, with 7 days to restore it first and a notice on your tryouts page. A director can delete a tryout sooner, with the same 7 days. A date can be up to a year back and two years ahead, so a mistyped year is caught when it is typed. **Can I export?** Yes. Download everything on the account page gives one file with every tryout, player number, score, evaluator note and placement you own. The Reports tab also gives a CSV of every score with the shown score, spread, rank and team, for a spreadsheet. **What if signal drops at the field?** The evaluator keeps scoring. Each save is kept on the phone and sent when the signal returns, trying every 20 seconds while the page is open and every 2 minutes after 5 failures. The page shows how many are not sent yet. If scoring closes first, the page lists the unsent numbers to show the director. **Do I need an email address or a password?** No. The director signs in with a passkey: your phone or computer makes it with your fingerprint, face or screen lock. You can add up to 10 passkeys and you get a one-time recovery code. An email address is optional, for the one notice Scores are in. **Do evaluators or families need an account?** No. An evaluator opens their private link; a family opens the report link with their code. Neither signs in, and neither is ever emailed. **Can I install it on my phone?** Yes. On an iPhone or iPad, open the Share menu in Safari and choose Add to Home Screen. On other browsers use Install in the menu. **Is Tryoutpad connected to a league or a club?** Tryoutpad is not affiliated with any league, governing body, club or tryout software company. Clubs use it to run their own tryouts. --- # Free tryout score sheet and number-to-name sheet, Tryoutpad URL: https://tryoutpad.com/printables/ Last reviewed: 2026-10-28 > Free tryout printables: an evaluator score sheet with 5 criteria and a number-to-name sheet for the director, as PDFs for A4 or US Letter. ## A tryout score sheet and a number-to-name sheet Two free sheets for a tryout on paper: a score sheet for evaluators with 5 criteria scored 1 to 5, and the director's number-to-name sheet. Scoring by link already exists in many forms. What a club rarely has is a simple, private way to tell each family how their own child was seen, without sharing anyone else's scores. That report is the reason Tryoutpad exists, and it is free. ### How it works, briefly The director signs in with a passkey and sets up the tryout: age groups, a rubric and player numbers. Each evaluator gets a private link and taps a score per criterion for each number. The director sees a rank table per group, with each player's evaluator spread, places players on teams and publishes the reports. Each family scans the code on their slip and sees one report: the average per criterion, the club's next steps, and, if the club wants, the team and the rank. ### Numbers, not names The site never asks for a child's name, birth date, photo, school or contact details, and the free-text boxes refuse email addresses, web addresses and phone numbers. The director keeps the number-to-name sheet on paper. Evaluator links and family codes are stored only as scrambled digests, so a copy of the database would open nothing. A tryout is deleted a year after its date. ### Who it is for A youth football, hockey, basketball or netball club; a dance or gymnastics school picking squads; a swim club grouping lanes; any club that scores children on a few criteria on one day and wants to tell families how it went without a stream of emails. ### What it is not It is not a selection authority: the scores are the averaged views of the club's evaluators on one day, and the club decides. It does not email families or evaluators. Tryoutpad is not affiliated with any league, governing body, club or tryout software company. ### Install it On a phone it can sit on your home screen like an app. On an iPhone or iPad, open the Share menu in Safari and choose Add to Home Screen. On other browsers, use Install in the menu. ### Contact Questions and problem reports go to socialreminderinfo@gmail.com. No child's name is stored. Last updated 28 October 2026 ### Where it is kept Everything below is kept in one Cloudflare D1 database that belongs to this site. Cloudflare chooses where the database lives; the region is not pinned, so it may be outside your country. The pages themselves are static files served by Cloudflare Pages. ### Children Players are numbers. There is no field anywhere for a child's name, birth date, photo, school, address, position or contact details. The labels a director writes for criteria, age groups and teams are refused if they ask for a child's name, date or year of birth, address, postcode, school or contact details. The notes a director or evaluator writes refuse the @ sign, web addresses and runs of 7 or more digits, and show the reminder to use the player number, never a name. A name typed into a note cannot be detected reliably, so the club is responsible for keeping names out (the terms say so). The director keeps the number-to-name sheet on paper; the app never reads it. ### What is stored for a tryout - The tryout's name, date and time zone, scale, rubric, age groups, teams and their sizes, status, and the club's next steps for the reports. - Each player's number, age group, whether they withdrew, the team they were placed on, and a note to the family if the director wrote one. - Each player's family code as a scrambled form (SHA-256) only. The code is shown to the director once, to print, and is not kept. When the club makes new codes, the old code's scrambled form is kept with the tryout, so an old slip says that codes were reissued and when. - A short history the families can notice: when codes were reissued, when scoring was reopened, when reports were published or hidden. - Each evaluator's name or role as the director typed it, which groups they score, and their scoring link as a scrambled form only. - Every score an evaluator saved (a number per criterion) and their optional note for the director, which never appears on a family report. - The club's report link as a scrambled form, plus a sealed copy that only this server can open with its own secret key, so the director can share it again. ### What is stored for an owner - A random account id, the account name you chose for your passkey manager, and when the account was made. - For each passkey: its public key, its id, a signature counter, the name you gave it and when it was added and last used. Never a fingerprint, a face or any biometric data: those stay on your device. - A scrambled form (SHA-256) of your recovery code. The code itself is shown to you once and not kept. - For each signed in device: a scrambled form of its session id, and when it was made, last used and when it expires (90 days after the last use). - Your email address, only if you add one, and whether you confirmed it. It is used only for the confirmation link and the one notice, Scores are in. It is the one place an email address is ever stored. - Notices for you, and a record of each email sent, kept 30 days. ### What is stored for evaluators and families Nothing about them as people. They have no account and no cookie, and are never emailed. An evaluator's saves are stored as the scores above. When a family opens a report, the request is counted for the wrong-code limit below (in a bucket keyed by a scramble of the network address, and one for the tryout); a right code is given back at once, so only wrong codes stay counted. The bucket rows are deleted after 2 hours. ### Limits on how fast requests come To stop guessing and flooding, the server counts, in hourly buckets: score saves per scoring link (240) and per network address (1,200); a director's changes (300); sign-in steps per network address; and wrong family codes per network address (10, which pauses that device or network for an hour) and per tryout from everywhere (300, against guessing spread over many places). The director sees the tryout's count of wrong codes. The address is stored only as a keyed scramble that cannot be turned back into the address, and each bucket is deleted after 2 hours. Network addresses are never written to logs. ### How long it is kept - A tryout and everything in it: read-only once 30 days have passed since both its date and the day it was set up and nothing has changed in it for 30 days. Due for deletion 365 days after the later of its date and the day it was set up: it is then deleted with 7 days to restore (the director sees a notice), and deleted for good after that. Its report link then says the report was removed by the club's schedule for 90 more days. - A tryout the director deletes: 7 days, while it can be restored, then deleted for good. - Your account: until you delete it. A deleted account and every tryout in it: 7 days, while you can sign in and cancel, then deleted for good. - Sessions: until 90 days after the last visit on that device, or until you sign out. - Passkey sign in requests: 5 minutes. Rate limit buckets: 2 hours. Email records and notices: 30 days. ### What stays on a device On an evaluator's phone, scores not yet sent are kept in the browser's local storage under keys beginning with `tryoutscore`, with the first 8 characters of their link to tell links apart, until the server confirms each one. The secret part of every link sits after the # sign, which browsers do not send to any server in the address, and a family code is taken out of the address bar as soon as the report page reads it. ### How to see and delete it On your account page, Download everything gives one file with every tryout, player number, score, note and placement you own, without links or codes. Delete my account removes everything after the 7 days above; you can also delete a single tryout. Requests by email go to socialreminderinfo@gmail.com. ### Cookies One cookie, and only for directors who sign in: a session cookie that keeps you signed in. It cannot be read by page scripts and is never sent to another site. Evaluators and families get no cookie. ### Page counts Visits may be counted by Cloudflare's own page counter, which sets no cookie and records that a page was opened, never what you typed. There is no other analytics. ### Payments No paid plan is offered at present; if one is added, this page will describe it. ### Email Only directors can receive email, only at an address they added and confirmed, and only for the one notice per tryout. Families and evaluators are never emailed. Emails carry no tracking images. ### Typeface Headings and numbers are set in Oswald, under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, served from this site. Last updated 28 October 2026 ### What this is Tryoutpad is a scoring pad for a club's own tryouts. A director sets up a tryout, evaluators score player numbers by private link, and each family opens its own player's report with a code. The scores are the averaged views of the club's evaluators on one day. Tryoutpad does not make, check or stand behind any selection: team decisions are the club's alone, and questions from families go to the club. ### The club's duties The club that runs a tryout decides why it collects scores and is responsible for telling families what is collected and how reports work, under the law that applies to it. This is not legal advice. The club keeps the number-to-name sheet on paper and must keep names, contact details and other identifying details of children out of every note and label: the site refuses contact details and labels that ask for identity, but it cannot detect a name reliably. Each slip's code opens one player's report; the club hands each slip to that player's family only. ### Names used Sports, browsers and passkey managers are named descriptively. Tryoutpad is not affiliated with any league, governing body, club or tryout software company. ### Payments No paid plan is offered at present; if one is added, this page will describe it. ### Your content The club owns what it puts into a tryout. You can download everything you own and delete a tryout or your whole account at any time; the privacy page says exactly what is stored and for how long. Tryouts are deleted 365 days after their date (or the day they were set up, if later), with 7 days to restore first. ### Acceptable use Use it for your own club's tryouts. Do not enter anything unlawful or hateful, do not enter children's names or contact details, do not try to guess links or codes, and do not send requests at a rate that degrades the site for other people. Tryouts that break these terms may be removed. ### Warranty and liability The site is provided as it is, without warranty of any kind, and runs within free hosting limits that can make it busy for a while. To the extent the law allows, Tryoutpad is not liable for any loss arising from its use, including a score that was not saved, a selection made from the scores, or a link or code that was shared further than intended. ### Contact Questions and problem reports go to socialreminderinfo@gmail.com.
